24-hour Media Diary

6:00 am: When I woke up for work I scrolled on my Instagram feed for a few minutes while I was getting ready. I checked my direct messages from the day before to see what my friends had sent me and watched a few reels.

6:30 am: I checked the weather app for the day to see how cold it would be to determine how much I would need to bundle up.

9:15 am: When I got to work I didn’t use my phone again until I had my first break where I scrolled Instagram for a few minutes while I ate my breakfast.

10:30 am: A little bit further into my shift me and a coworker were having a discussion about a meme I had seen and I looked it up on YouTube to show him what I was talking about.

12:30 pm: When I had my lunch break I decided to scroll on Etsy to try and find some more stickers to put on my water bottle, as I’m trying to cover it in fish stickers and I know Etsy will have cool ones that are original and will support small artists.

2:00-3:30 pm: I was washing dishes for the last hour of my shift so I played music from my phone through Spotify until I was off. I listened to music on my way home, and when I got home I listened to it while I showered.

I’ve been trying to stay off my phone while I’m sitting at home so I read for a few hours and I did update my Goodreads app so that I can keep track of the books I’ve read this year. Afterwards my girlfriend came over and we fell asleep watching Netflix on my laptop.

This made me realize that as much as I try to take “breaks” from media and the internet, there are so many ways that its been incorporated into my daily life that I don’t even realize.

I get a lot of my information from the New York Times, the Washington Post, and the Associated Press. They’re all pretty reliable sources but they can be biased so I usually take whatever they say with a grain of salt and make sure to check multiple sources when I’m researching or looking into something specific.
